In the past year, we have seen an increase in the number and intensity of domestic and sexual violence incidents.  A triple homicide in May, a pregnant woman beaten to the point of losing her child, a woman hospitalized with burns from a pot of boiling water thrown on her by her husband, and a fatal shooting by a man of his girlfriend a month ago name just a few of the incidents that are happening every day.

Most of these public victims – and many more in the shadows – were and are members of our local faith communities.  Experience and research say that members of faith communities who are endangered by a spouse, dating partner, or family member are more likely to approach their faith leader with their problem than almost anyone else.  This year’s Faith Summit asks the sometimes life or death question: Are you prepared?

This half day Faith Summit will give faith leaders and faith community members a chance to think through a variety of likely scenarios, gain important information and resources from a panel of experts, and develop a response that increases safety for victims of violence.  In addition, IMPACT personal safety will give a workshop on what it takes to stay safe and the high school peer educators on dating violence prevention from Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish will give a presentation.
