Tuesday Legislative Newsflash Tue, February 2nd, 2010
Senate Bill 27: On Monday, the bill to create a uniform domestic violence report form was tabled in the Senate Judiciary (it will not go forward). Perhaps we can have a debrief from our legislators at the next CCRC Quarterly Meeting!
House Bill 17: Today (Tuesday) the House will vote on HB17 which prevents law enforcement certification for people convicted of or having pled guilty to domestic violence in the last 3 years, and giving the law enforcement certification board the power to suspend or revoke certification if a law enforcement officer is convicted of or pled guilty to domestic violence. If you signed the CCRC letter, your support of this legislation was sent to house members this morning. Please call your house member this morning and ask where they stand on the issue! Points to mention:
Domestic violence is as serious as other crimes (like DUI and theft) that already may be cause for revocation or suspension of law enforcement certification
Law enforcement officers who are convicted of domestic violence should not be responding to domestic violence calls and domestic violence victims
This bill does not force certification suspension or revocation. It simply empowers law enforcement agencies to take appropriate actions when law enforcement officers are found guilty of domestic violence
You can find phone numbers for your state reprentatives HERE.
Senate Bill 2: This bill narrows the definition of household member, focusing on intimate partners and is supported by the CCRC. Sharon Pino reports that it is scheduled for senate vote and doesn't anticipate any problems.
Senate Bill 26: This bill creates the Domestic Violence Leadership Commission in statute so that it doesn't disappear with the next Governor. It is scheduled for the Senate Finance Committee at 1:30 p.m./30 min after senate session finishes TODAY (Tuesday). Your calls to the Finance Committee Members or presence at the hearing (we are first on the list) would be greatly appreciated. (you can listen or watch the senate proceedings to determine when the session ends.)
