Your signature on the letter below will help support the efforts of the governor's office, the NM Attorney General's Office, and the CCRC Legislative Workgroup to improve our domestic violence laws. Thank you for your support!
Dear Legislator,
We, the below members and supporters of the Santa Fe Coordinated Community Response Council (CCRC), support the recommendations of the CCRC Legislative Workgroup, which are attached to this letter.
The difficult fiscal situation of the legislature is matched by a difficult fiscal situation for organizations and agencies that respond to domestic violence. These updates to New Mexico Statute have minimal fiscal impact on state budget while insuring that federal grant monies for domestic violence programs are not cut due to our state laws being out of step with national standards.
These statutory changes update definitions of household members so that the laws are used in true domestic violence situations, give law enforcement a powerful tool to correctly identify the dangerousness of domestic violence incidents, give domestic violence crimes serious weight when vetting law enforcement officers, and ensure that the good work of the New Mexico Domestic Violence Leadership Commission continues.
Victims of domestic violence are some of our most vulnerable citizens and we have one of the highest rates of domestic violence in the nation. These changes will help New Mexico remain at the forefront of efforts to intervene in domestic violence in the future.
Sincerely,
